"I cannot break it...I can take it no more."
Rough hands shake me awake and drag me from the cell. I turn to look at Avi before remembering she's been gone for hours. The guards had come to get her earlier for more torture. I'm surprised that I hadn't dreamed while I slept. But all thoughts leave my head as the guards drop me onto the hard wood floor. Across the room I see Avi,, arms shackled to the wall, body limp, dried blood sticking to her hair and skin. She looks up at me before closing her eyes and breathing a small sigh. For a scary moment, I think it's her last, and I shout her name. Someone kicks me in the ribs, and I roll onto my side, too exhausted to retaliate.
"Let her sleep, Sam," the man looming over me muses, "Ms. Crown has been through a lot."
I look up through squinted eyes at the man, or really, boy. He's around my age, eighteen, but he has authority over me.
He's Cadan, one of the highest nobles. And a royal snot, at that.
"Now, will you please tell me what I need to know?"
"I've held out this long," I think, "just a bit longer."
I don't answer, gaining another kick. This time I cough blood. I hear footsteps crossing to the other side of the room.
"Have you and Ms. Crown grown close over these past weeks, Mr. Fallon?"
I try to open my eyes, but only see red when I do. "We've only just met. We're strangers to one another."
"That's too bad."
I hear the chime of a knife sliding out of its sheath and my eyes snap open to see Cadan with his dagger at Avi's throat. A dot of blood trickles down her pale neck.
"Wai-."
A gust of wind throws itself against the large window overlooking the city far below, so hard that I hear the glass emit a small cracking noise. Thankfully, it draws Cadan's attention as well.
The crack grows and branches in different directions, and rain sprinkles over the glass.
"What is this?" Cadan questions at no one at first, then at me. I keep my eyes in Avi.
"I think she's dreaming."
Avi's eyes snap open, and she looks right at me as the window shatters. Wind fills the room, acting as a tornado as it begins to suck up everything in its path. I shut my eyes and cling to a bar sticking out of the wall. When I open my eyes again, Cadan is gone. Avi is still shackled to the wall, unconscious body levitating towards the vortex as it continues its spin cycle.
"Avi!" I shout, making my way towards her. I find my strength and my power, using my telekinesis to undo her bonds. I realize my mistake when my feet leave the ground and the two of us go flying into the vortex.
AVI NOOOOOOOOO
