Alys in Wonderland: Chapter Two: Daydreams

I stare at the window from my seat in the back of the classroom. I try to pay attention to the lesson, but my head is somewhere else, somewhere where school doesn't matter.
Only Wonderland.
I think back to Davin as he strolled down one of the halls, his pace amazingly quick for a man who, I learned from my dad, had been locked up for over eleven years. He had donned a clean white lab suit and had this air about him like he was the most important person in the world, even above my father. He barked orders at nurses and doctors, shoving past everyone who got in his way, smiling wildly the whole time.
"Doctor Davin!" I called after him.
He didn't even turn around."Not now, kid, I've got to get started on this." He nearly skipped with glee."It's just so exciting!"
"You said you've done this before?"
"Yes, and not quite successfully, I might add."
"Then where are we going?"
His smile widened at the corners."To get the rest of the characters."
I was forced to wait outside as Davin entered a large glass-plated room glowing purple. I leaned against the wall impatiently until he returned, stalking past me."It's just all the same!"he shouted.
I scuttled after him, trying to calm him down as I nearly ran beside him trying to keep up.
"What's wrong?"
I was almost surprised to see that he was actually glaring in front of him as he walked, his hands clenched at his sides."They're all too much like the others. Almost as if it was planned." He shook his head."It might not work if it's the exact same, but the characters are so perfect. Unless..."
He stopped, his sudden movement startling me and I ran into him from behind. He spun around and grasped my shoulders, his eyes wide with sudden realization.
"I can add a character!"
I blinked a couple times."Okay."
"And that character can be you!"
My knees nearly buckled and my breath caught in my throat."Um, what?"
He released me."Of course. Why didn't I think of it before? It's so perfect, it might just work!"
His "might" made me worry.
He turned back to me."Of course, the choice is completely yours. I wouldn't want to drag you into anything. But helping a girl who thinks she has no meaning in life...you could be a hero."
"Mr.Fallon?"
I’m jerked from my thoughts and blink, finding myself back in my history class. The teacher is glaring at me from the front of the class.
"Glad you could join us. Now if you're ready, could you answer the next question? I'm sure your little daydream Wonderland can wait."
You have no idea, Mrs. Parks.
No idea.
