Alys in Wonderland: Chapter Three: Volunteer

I walk at a near-running pace through the hallways, using my perfected ability to squeeze past anyone who got in my way. My dad jogs behind me, trying to stop me.
"Dillon, please think about this."
"I did, Dad, for two days, and I've made my decision."
"But it isn't the right decision."
I roll my eyes."That's your opinion, not mine."
He grasps my arm, pulling me back through the flow of nurses who are rushing to get to their destinations. My dad's eyes are filled win concern and worry."Please rethink this, son. You know what happens to people who do this. You've seen it. I don't want that to happen to you."
I gently tug my arm from his reach, my face hard with determination."This is my choice. I'm gonna help this girl. You don't have any right to stop me."
He looks away, and just before I’m about to turn around and leave, I feel his hand on my shoulder, his grip not quite hard enough to restrain me.
"I trust your decision, son," he says, nodding,"but please, whatever you do, beware of Davin. He isn't what you'd expect of a normal human being."
I shudder at his words and, hoping he hadn't felt it, turn and continue down the hall until I come to the door marked,"Experimentation Room 7." I knock and, when no one answers, open the door and stride in. The room is large and almost completely empty except for one stretcher in the middle of the room. A strange blue glow bounces off the six white walls, creating an eerie light that fills the room, and the faintest smell of rosemary that tickles my nose.
"Ah, Dillon," I hear to my left, and turn to see Davin step out of a room. He smiles and pulls the purple curtain closed. "I was wondering when you would show up again. Come, come and see."
He steps toward the stretcher, and I follow, glancing around the room and seeing purple curtains on each wall, all over the place, but I don't have time to count. Davin reaches the stretcher before me and is gazing down onto it lovingly, like a father. I join him and look down to see the girl on it, dressed in a light blue schoolgirl uniform, her hair tied in one side ponytail, a thin blue streak running through one side of her pale blonde. The emblem on her blazer is a black falcon, the sign of my father’s industry.
"Isn't she just adorable!?"Davin says happily. I’m beginning to rethink my decision, because his reaction is...strange, but I shake those thoughts from my mind.
"Um...Doctor Davin?"I say,"I've made up my mind. I want to help you...help her."
He look at me, his gold eye glittering with excitement."Do you?" he turns from me, looking over at each of the purple curtains."and what does Daddy think about this?"
I shake my head."I don't care about my father’s judgement."
That isn't all true, but I want Davin to think I’m fully with him.
"I'm glad to hear you say that,"he says, almost laughing. He turns to me and takes my arm, eyes wild with joy, smile so big I’m afraid it might break his face.
"Well, let's do it then!!"He almost shouts.
Before I can argue, he’s pulled me into one of the curtained rooms.
"Uh," I sputter," uh, now? Do I have time to get ready?"
"What's there to get ready for?"he ask. He has a point.
The room has glass walls and a single bed in it, a strange headset connected to a table by the bed.
"Now, you just get comfy,"Davin says, examining the headset,"I'll be right with you."
I climb onto the bed, trying to calm the shaking in my knees. A nurse comes in and looks at me worriedly before giving me a shot in the arm, and I know that there’s no backing out now. I look through one of the glass walls as Davin slips out of the room with the nurse. I already feel whatever the nurse gave me overtaking my body.
Through the walls I can see beds like mine with other people on them, each one with their eyes shut tightly. I’m going wherever they were going. Some magical mind world. Davin slips back into the room and tells me to relax as he sets the headpiece over my ears. "Don't panic. It'll be over in a few minutes."He stops before the headset slipped over my eyes and winks at me, his voice muffled as he says, "See you inside."
Then everything is dark. I feel the sedation taking over my mind and making my vision blurry, but I can just make out a TV screen with opening credits rolling. Then a black and white picture comes onto the screen as a man says,"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen for the first ever live showing of," I read the words on the screen.
"Alys in Wonderland."
